Sergeant Thomas Shaw and Sergeant George Jordan were part of a small detachment of nineteen cavalrymen that was attacked while holding an important position at Carrizo Canyon, New Mexico, on August 12, 1881. Though vastly outnumbered, the two non-commissioned officers gallantly led their troops in forcing the enemy back, holding their ground in an extremely exposed position, thereby preventing the numerically superior force from surrounding their command. Both non-coms were awarded the Medal of Honor for their gallant leadership in this battle.
