In an engagement with a hostile Indian force at Big Dry Fork, Arizona, on July 17, 1882, Troop I was crossing a canyon rim when they were surrounded on all sides by the hostile force. The soldiers began a retreat to the canyon when they were fiercely attacked. Second Lieutenant George Morgan and six of his men took shelter behind a tree to return fire. Later, while under attack, Second Lieutenant Morgan took a strategic position to cover the movement of his troops, firing on the advancing enemy and refusing to be pushed from his position. He was wounded in this attack. Also earning Medals of Honor in this action were First Lieutenant Frank West, Second Lieutenant Thomas Cruise and First Sergeant Charles Taylor.
George Morgan graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1880.
