William McBryar was one of three Cavalry sergeants awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism on March 7, 1890, which award was actually for continuing courage during engagements with hostile Apache Indians. Sergeant McBryar's citation note his: "Distinguished himself for coolness, bravery and marksmanship while his troop was in pursuit of hostile Apache Indians." Also earning Medals of Honor on this date and for similar bravery were Sergeants James Daniels and Indian Scout, Sergeant Rowdy.
