Captain Emmet Crawford led a cavalry unit in pursuit of Geronimo and Natchez, when he was summoned by the hostile leaders for a conference on January 11, 1886. Unfortunately, the cavalry's Indian scouts were mistaken by a force of Mexican soldiers pursuing the Apache to be hostile, and began firing. Lieutenant Marion Maus, who spoke Spanish, tried to halt the confrontation, but gunfire erupted. Captain Crawford was mortally wounded and Lieutenant Maus promptly took command, rallying his men and leading them through a two-hour battle until a truce was declared to enable both sides to tend their wounded. The following morning Lieutenant Maus, Scout Tom Horn, and five Indian scouts met with Geronimo. After Maus told the Indian chief, "I came to capture or destroy you and your band," Geronimo, impressed by Maus' courage and honesty, walked over and shook his hand, consenting to meeting with General Crook, the American commander, in order to end the continued warfare between the cavalry and the Apache warriors.
Marion Maus graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1874.
