Two days after the historic and tragic battle at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, fifty-three men of the Sixth Cavalry escorted a supply train to the regiment's camp at the site of the battle. As the train prepared to cross the partially frozen White River on the route of their march, they were engaged by a force of 300 Indians. Six men earned Medals of Honor in the engagement that followed. Captain John Kerr commanded his troop in action against the Indian force on the north bank of the river, defeating an enemy force that vastly outnumbered his own and preventing the renegade party from entering the sanctuary of the Bad Lands.
John Kerr graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1870
