At Camas Meadows, Idaho, in action against a hostile Indian force, Captain James Jackson's trumpeter was shot and killed. Despite the heavy pursuit of a band of warriors, Captain James Jackson, with the assistance of a couple of his men, secured the body of the trumpeter. Four other U.S. Army soldiers were awarded Medals of Honor for action at Camas Meadows as well as previous actions. They were: First Sergeant Henry Wilkins, Corporal Harry Garland, Private Wilfred Clark, and Farrier William Jones.
