In an engagement with hostile Indians at Clearwater, Idaho, on July 11, 1887, the fierce fire of the Nez Perce warriors forced a group of soldiers to abandon a howitzer and two Gatling guns. These fell silent as the soldiers withdrew, and were laying between the opposing forces lines and only a few yards from the Indian entrenchment. Voluntarily, First Lieutenant Charles Humphrey assembled a small party which, under a withering fire, entered the battlefield to engage the Indians at close range and recover these important weapons.
