In action with hostile Indian warriors at Las Animas Canyon, New Mexico, on September 18, 1879, Sergeant John Denny braved a withering enemy fire to remove a wounded comrade from danger He was one of three men who earned Medals of Honor in the Las Animas Canyon battle. The other two men awarded Medals of Honor in that battle were: Second Lieutenant Robert Emmet and Second Lieutenant Matthias Day.
