In action with hostile Indian warriors at Las Animas Canyon, New Mexico, on September 18, 1879, Second Lieutenant Matthias Day advanced alone into the enemy's lines and carried a wounded soldier of his command to safety, despite the fact that the enemy fire was severe and he had been ordered to retreat. He was one of three men who earned Medals of Honor in the Las Animas Canyon battle. The other two men awarded Medals of Honor in that battle were: Second Lieutenant Robert Emmet and Sergeant John Denny.
Matthias Day graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1877.
