In an engagement with a hostile Indian force at Big Dry Fork, Arizona, on July 17, 1882, Second Lieutenant Thomas Cruse went to the aid of a wounded soldier. In a night attack on the Indian camp, Private McClellan fell wounded. The Indians were so close, Second Lieutenant Cruse called out to the wounded man to remain quiet so the enemy could not locate him. He then returned fire on the hostile force, charging them with his carbine to keep them under cover while Blacksmith Martin came up to remove the wounded man and help him to safety. Also earning Medals of Honor in this action were First Lieutenant Frank West, Second Lieutenant George Morgan and First Sergeant Charles Taylor.
Thomas Cruse graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1879.
