Two days after the historic and tragic battle at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, fifty-three men of the Sixth Cavalry escorted a supply train to the regiment's camp at the site of the battle. As the train prepared to cross the partially frozen White River on the route of their march, they were engaged by a force of 300 Indians. Six men earned Medals of Honor in the engagement that followed. First Lieutenant Benjamin Cheever's heroism was recognized for heading the advance over the river, and in making a spirited movement to assist the embattled men of Troop K.
