On August 30, 1881, a party of mounted Indians approached the Cavalry camp along the Cibicu Creek in Arizona. Captain E. C. Hentig, seeking to avoid confrontation, urged the Indian party to go away, when one warrior opened fire. The cavalrymen were on foot, not expecting a fight, and were caught unprepared. Captain Hentig and his orderly fell in the initial volley. While Lieutenant William Carter began the dangerous work of recovering the dead and wounded and dragging them back to the relative safety of the camp, Sergeant Alonzo Bowman voluntarily mounted an attack, leading his small group of dis-mounted cavalrymen in the charge against more than 100 Indians. Both Sergeant Bowman and Lieutenant Carter were awarded the Medal of Honor for their separate acts of heroism in this battle. Private Richard Heartery was also awarded the Medal of Honor for his own heroism in action against the numerically superior hostile force.
William Carter graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1873.
