After hostile Indians attacked a ranch near Camp Canada Alamosa, New Mexico, Second Lieutenant George Burnett took the first available detachment to pursue and attack the hostile Apache marauders. With a fifty-man force, some of whom were mounted Mexicans from the plundered ranch, he located and attacked the hostile force that outnumbered his small command two-to-one. In the battle that followed he saw one soldier who was dismounted and in danger of being cut off. Alone, and under heavy fire, Second Lieutenant Burnett went to the rescue of his soldier, galloping quickly into the fusillade that twice struck his horse. Also awarded Medals of Honor in this action were Private Augustus Walley and First Sergeant William Moses. |
| George Burnett graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1880. |
