First Lieutenant John Babcock was leading a scouting column of the 5th Cavalry near Spring Creek, Nebraska, on May 16, 1869, when his column was attacked by a vastly superior force of hostile Indians. Lieutenant Babcock directed his men to the high ground where he had them dismount to return fire. Despite the danger, in order to lead, direct, and encourage his men by his fearless example, Lieutenant Babcock remained in his saddle throughout the engagement despite the fact that the fire was so intense his horse was wounded. |
