From dawn to dusk on September 17, 1862, General Lee's outnumbered Confederate forces fought desperately against the Union Army under General George McClellan at Antietam, Maryland in one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War. More than 20,000 men were killed in the day-long fight, and twenty Union soldiers served with such courage and distinction that they were awarded the Medal of Honor. Among these heroes was Private Samuel Cole Wright who voluntarily advanced under a destructive fire and removed a fence which would have impeded a contemplated charge.
