First Lieutenant Henry Wood earned the Medal of Honor for distinguished gallantry in action against the rebel enemy forces during the engagement at Wilson's Creek, Missouri, on August 10, 1861. He was one of five men cited for courage in this battle.

Other's cited for heroism at Wilson's Creek were: Corporal Lorenzo Immell, Major John Schofield, and First Lieutenant William Wherry
