In action against Confederate forces at Shiloh, Tennessee, on April 6, 1862, a box of much-needed ammunition was abandoned between the lines. Under heavy fire from both sides, Private Williams and a companion dashed forward to secure the box of ammunition. Though his companion was mortally wounded in this heroic effort, Private Williams succeeded in returning to the line of his regiment with the box of ammunition. |
