From dawn to dusk on September 17, 1862, General Lee's outnumbered Confederate forces fought desperately against the Union Army under General George McClellan at Antietam, Maryland in one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War. More than 20,000 men were killed in the day-long fight, and twenty Union soldiers served with such courage and distinction that they were awarded the Medal of Honor. Among these heroes was Private Frank Whitman who was among the last to leave the field at Antietam and was instrumental in saving the lives of several of his comrades at the imminent risk of his own. He was later conspicuous in battle at Spotsylvania, Virginia where on May 18, 1864 Private Whitman was foremost in line in the assault, where he lost a leg. |
