Major William Wells was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the last day of that battle major Well's 1st Vermont Cavalry was south of Big Round Top preparing to assault the Confederate right flank. Shortly after the failure of Pickett's Charge, Union General Kilpatrick ordered the attack to begin. The first column of Union cavalry was decimated by fire from the Confederate Infantry, but General Kilpatrick continued to order his men into the battle. Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Major Wells and his cavalry engaged the enemy in fierce hand-to-hand combat. Though the assault ultimately failed, it was one of the most daring charges of the battle. For his heroism in leading his cavalry men in this deadly but vital assault, Major Wells was awarded the Medal of Honor. |
