Brigadier General Alexander Webb was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the last day of that Battles General Webb's four Pennsylvania regiments were posted on Cemetery Ridge at what became the aiming point for Pickett's Charge. During that deadly assault, General Webb remained at the front of his men his colors. When General Armistead and his men crossed the wall into a void left by the retreating 71st Pennsylvania Regiment, and despite the fact that every member of his color guard was killed or wounded, General Webb remained in the forefront, leading his men in the ultimate defeat of Pickett's charge, during which he was himself wounded. |
