Colonel Wheelock Veazey was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the last day of that battle Colonel Veazey led his regiment in a critical defense of the Union center. During Pickett's charge he ordered his regiment to execute a "right wheel" to face the flank of the advancing enemy columns. From this point they inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, prompting two Confederate brigades to move up to support their flank. Colonel Veazey again led his men with tremendous courage, turning back the advancing rebels in action that saw the 16th Vermont Infantry capture two flags and hundreds of prisoners. Later, Major General Abner Doubleday wrote that Colonel Veazey and his men: "Broke the desperate charge of Pickett, saved the day and with it, the whole North from invasion and devastation." |
