At Fort Donnelson, Tennessee three members of the color guard fell to enemy fire. Corporal Voltaire Twombly rushed forward to take up the colors, immediately being knocked down by a spent ball himself. Despite this, he immediately arose and continued to carry the colors until the end of the engagement. |

After the war Mr. Twombly attended the Burlington (IA) Business College and soon after married. He worked as a flour merchant in Ottumwa, then in the milling business at Pittsburgh, and as a merchant in Keosauqua. He served as Van Buren County treasurer for four years and as mayor of Keosauqua for nearly a year. Mr. Twombly also served as the Iowa State Treasurer from 1885 to 1891. He founded a bank in Des Moines and served as its president from 1891 to 1908. |
