On December 31, 1862 and the following day, Union forces engaged Confederate soldiers in a battle at Stone River Tennessee. Private John Tweedale was one of eight soldiers who was so conspicuous for his gallantry in this action that he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Others cited in this action were: First Lieutenants Henry Freeman and Frederick Phisterer, Chaplain John Whitehead, Sergeant Major John Farquhar, and Privates John Bourke, Joseph Prentice, and Wilson Vance.
