During Union General Sherman's march to the sea the Confederate forces under General Johnson fell back rapidly, but stiffened their resolve to make a stand at Resaca, Georgia, on May 13 - 16, 1864 during which eight men earned Medals of Honor. On May 15, Major Henry Tremain who was who was attached to the staff of Major General Sickles who was visiting the forces at Resaca, became aware of a deadly situation. In the confusion of the battle, Union forces under General Coburn began firing on the brigade of Union General Harrison. Though not assigned to the forces at Resaca and simply visiting with his own commander, Major Tremain boldly rode down the front line of General Coburn's command, knocking down the muskets of the front rank with his sword and his hands. Captain Paul Oliver also assisted in ending this deadly hail of "friendly fire" that otherwise would have proved disastrous. Both men earned Medals of Honor for their prompt and heroic actions. |
