Following the Wilderness Battle and the repulse of the Union Forces (May 5 - 7, 1864) General Grant pushed ahead on the Confederates' right to Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia, where he engaged Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army from May 8 - 19, with the bloodiest battle occurring on May 12. In that battle thirty-six soldiers earned Medals of Honor including Sergeant Charles Tracy who, at the risk of his own life, assisted in carrying to a place of safety a wounded and helpless officer. The following year on April 2, 1865, while engaged at Petersburg, Virginia, Sergeant Tracy advanced with the pioneers, and, under heavy fire, assisted in removing two lines of chevaux-de-frise. He was twice wounded but advanced to the third line, where he was again severely wounded, losing a leg. |
