Sergeant James Thompson was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the second day of that battle Sergeant Thompson's regiment fought throughout the ay along Houck's Ridge (between Wheatfield and Devil's Den.) the following day while clearing out the enemy forces in the woods in front of their position, the 1st Pennsylvania Rifles engaged General George T. Anderson's Georgia Brigade in fierce fighting. Sergeant Thompson braved the hail of fire to capture the flag of the 15th Georgia Infantry (Confederate States of America) while his comrades accounted for the taking of more than 200 Confederate prisoners. |
