Major Sidney Thaxter was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in an engagement at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, on October 27, 1864. Major Thaxter voluntarily remained and participated in the battle with conspicuous gallantry, although his term of service had expired and he had been ordered home to be mustered out. His was one of six actions that merited award of the Medal of Honor in this battle. |
