From dawn to dusk on September 17, 1862, General Lee's outnumbered Confederate forces fought desperately against the Union Army under General George McClellan at Antietam, Maryland in one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War. More than 20,000 men were killed in the day-long fight, and twenty Union soldiers served with such courage and distinction that they were awarded the Medal of Honor. Among these heroes was Second Lieutenant Charles Tanner who carried off the regimental colors, which had fallen within 20 yards of the enemy's lines, the color guard of nine men having all been killed or wounded. Lieutenant Tanner was himself wounded three times. |
