On October 4, 1862, the second day of an engagement with Confederate forces at Corinth Mississippi, Lieutenant Colonel Wager Swayne and First Lieutenant James Archer each earned Medals of Honor for separate actions. Lieutenant Colonel Swayne displayed conspicuous gallantry in restoring order at a critical moment in the battle, and in leading his regiment in a charge

In the battle of the previous day two more soldiers, First Lieutenant William McCammon and Sergeant Denis Murphy, also earned Medals of Honor at Corinth.
