Major General David Sloan Stanley was one of ten men who earned the Medal of Honor in action against a Confederate force at Franklin, Tennessee, on November 30, 1864. At a critical moment in the heated battle, General Stanley rode to the front of one of his brigades, reestablished its lines, and gallantly led it In a successful assault. His was one of only two (of ten) Medals awarded for actions other than the capture of Confederate flags in this battle.
David Sloan Stanley graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1852.
