Private Charles Stacey was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the second day of that battle, Private Stacey's unit was in position near the Emmitsburg and Taneytown Roads. Company H was sent out as skirmishers but was driving back. Company D was then ordered to replace them, and also met a withering fire from enemy sharpshooters. Private Stacey volunteered to go to an advanced position to locate them, and upon finding the enemy sharpshooters, began returning their fire. He remained in this exposed position alone until his company was recalled. Later that night his company was again sent forward. In that action Private Stacey was captured and taken as a prisoner of war. |
