Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Smith was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in an engagement at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, on October 27, 1864. Lieutenant Colonel Smith led part of a brigade in this action, saving two pieces of artillery, capturing a flag of the enemy forces, and taking a number of rebel soldiers prisoner. His was one of six actions that merited award of the Medal of Honor in this battle. |
