Thirty soldiers of the Union Army were awarded Medals of Honor for their heroism in battle against the Confederate forces during the September 29, 1864, battle at Chapin's Farm, Virginia. Corporal Ebenezer Skellie earned the Medal of Honor for his heroism in taking up the colors of his regiment after the color bearer fell. Corporal Skellie carried the colors throughout the first and second charges of his regiment. After all the other color guards had been killed or wounded, he continued in advance of his men and was himself wounded as he advanced with the regimental flag upon the enemy's works. |
