Daniel Edgar Sickles began his military career in 1861, raising an army of New York volunteers in part so that he could become a Brigadier General. His first major engagement came at Chancellorsville, Virginia in May 1863. Despite severe losses, Sickles led well. Sickles took a brief leave following the battle at Chancellorsville, returning to the Army of the Potomac on June 30, 1863. The following day the battle of Gettysburg (VA) began. |
| Daniel Sickles served in New York State Assembly in 1847 and New York State Senate from 1856-57. From 1857 until the beginning of the Civil War (1861) he represented the NY 3rd Congressional District in the US House of Representatives. After the war and a distinguished military career, he served as US Congressman from New York's 10th District from 1893-95. From 1869 to 1874 General Sickles served as the US Minister to Spain. |
