First Sergeant Robert Shipley was one of seventeen soldiers who earned the Medal of Honor for bravery in the engagement with Confederate forces at Five Forks, Virginia, on April 1, 1865. He was cited for his capture of the battle flag of the 9th Virginia Infantry in hand-to-hand combat, joining fifteen of his comrades who were similarly cited for their capture of the enemy's colors in this action. |
