Private Marshall Sherman was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the second day of that battle, Private Sherman's regiment suffered nearly 80% casualties while fighting to plug a hole in the Union lines. The following day the few remaining men of the 1st Minnesota Infantry again charged the enemy during Pickett's Charge in order to again fill a gap in the Union lines. During the horrible fighting that followed, Private Sherman captured the flag of the 28th Virginia Infantry (Confederate States of America) of Garnett's Brigade. |
