General Burnsides' Union forces were besieged at Knoxville, Tennessee, during the month of November 1863. In an engagement on November 20, volunteer elements of the 17th Michigan Infantry conducted "burning parties" in coordination with a charge on the enemy's picket lines. In this hazardous mission Corporal Irwin Shepard and Private Andrew Kelley accompanied a small party to destroy buildings within the enemy's lines from which sharpshooters had been firing. They then disregarded an order to retire, and remained and completed the firing of the buildings, thus insuring their total destruction. This action was completed at the imminent risk of their life from the fire of the advancing enemy. Corporal John Falconer also earned a Medal of Honor in this action. |
