In the period from April 26 to May 6, 1863, Union and Confederate forces clashed at Chancellorsville, Virginia, in a battle that cost more than 30,000 casualties including the brilliant Confederate commander "Stonewall" Jackson. Twenty-four Union soldiers earned Medals of Honor in the one week period from April 30 to May 6. On May 3 Colonel William Sewell assumed command of a brigade and rallied around his colors a mass of men from other regiments. He then led these troops with great brilliancy through several hours of desperate conflict, remaining in command though wounded and inspiring his soldiers by his presence and the gallantry of his personal example. |

After service in the New Jersey state legislature, William Sewell was elected as a Senator from New Jersey (1881-87 and 1895-1901). In 1900 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention from New Jersey. |
