Major Alfred Sellers was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the afternoon of the first day of that battle the 11th Corps lost ground, exposing the right flank of the 1st Corps. Though under heavy fire, a charge was ordered to protect the 1st Corps' flank. Major Sellers, without orders, rushed to the front of the brigade and directed the required movements. He organized the line and placed it in a more advantageous position that allowed the brigade to pour an effective fire into the ranks of O'Neil's Brigade. This heavy fire eventually repulsed the Confederate attempt to turn the right flank of the 1st corps and also saved the 11th Corps from certain destruction. |
