In action against rebel forces at Peebles Farm, Virginia, on October 1, 1864, First Lieutenant Theodore Schwan received the Medal of Honor for his heroism at the time his regiment was forced to retreat by a superior Confederate force. At imminent risk of his own life and under the heavy fire of the enemy, he dragged a wounded and helpless officer to the rear, thus saving him from death or capture. |
