Major John Schofield earned the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry in leading a regiment in a successful charge against rebel enemy forces during the engagement at Wilson's Creek, Missouri, on August 10, 1861. He was one of five men cited for courage in this battle.

Other's cited for heroism at Wilson's Creek were: Corporal Lorenzo Immell, First Lieutenant William Wherry, and First Lieutenant Henry Wood.
John Schofield graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1853.
