Brigadier General Rufus Saxton was awarded the Medal of Honor for distinguished gallantry and conduct as a commander of U.S. Volunteers in defense of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, during the period from May 26 - 30, 1862.
Rufus Saxton graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1849.
