In the period from April 26 to May 6, 1863, Union and Confederate forces clashed at Chancellorsville, Virginia, in a battle that cost more than 30,000 casualties including the brilliant Confederate commander "Stonewall" Jackson. Twenty-four Union soldiers earned Medals of Honor in the one week period from April 30 to May 6. On May 3 First Lieutenant Louis Sacriste save a gun of the 5th Maine Battery from capture. He was also cited for his heroism on October 14, 1863, at Auburn, Virginia, during which he voluntarily carried orders which resulted in saving from destruction or capture the picket line of the 1st Division, 2d Army Corps.
