Four soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroism during the battle at Malvern Hill, Virginia, on July 1, 1862. Among these four heroes was Lieutenant Colonel William Ripley who, at a critical moment during the battle brought up two regiments, which he led against the enemy himself. Lieutenant Colonel Ripley was severely wounded in this action. |
