Bugler Charles Reed was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the evening of July 2, his battery had been forced to retreat along Wheatfield Road to Trostle's farm where they were ordered to "hold the enemy in check, sacrificing the Battery, if necessary, until the 6th Maine battery could get its guns in position. During the evening Captain Bigelow was wounded and fell between the opposing lines. Amid the shells and bullets of both sides, Bugler Reed raced to the side of the wounded officer. He supported the captain with one hand and led their horses with the other and, despite the continuing hail of enemy and friendly fire and the slow pace required by the captain's severe injuries, escorted him from the field of battle. |
