Eighteen soldiers were awarded Medals of Honor for their heroism during the heavy fighting at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 13, 1862. In action against the Confederate forces, Colonel Matthew Quay voluntarily resumed his duties on the even of the battle although he was out of service, his tenure completed. He then took a conspicuous part in the Union charge on the heights, which were held by the enemy forces. |
