In action against Confederate forces at Sinking Creek Valley, Virginia, on November 26, 1862, Major William Powell displayed great courage and leadership. During a raid on the enemy, with but twenty men, he charged and captured the enemy's camp, 500 strong, without the loss of man or gun.
