Captain Samuel Pingree was one of three soldiers who earned the Medal of Honor for heroism during the battle at Lee's Mills, Virginia, on April 16, 1862. He gallantly led his company across a wide, deep creek and drove the enemy from the rifle pits, which were within two yards of the farther bank. Then he remained at the head of his men until wounded a second time. |
| Samuel Pingree was mustered out on 27 July, 1864, and returned to the practice of law in Hartford. He was state attorney for Windsor county in 1867-1868, and a member of the Republican national convention in 1868. In 1882 he was elected lieutenant-governor, and in 1884 was chosen governor of the state. |
