While engaged with Confederate forces at Deep Bottom, Virginia, on August 14, 1864, Sergeant Alonzo Pickle became aware of a wounded officer who had fallen and lay helpless, very close to the enemy's lines of fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Pickle dashed across the field of fire under a hail of bullets to reach the stricken officer, and then returned across the field carrying the officer to safety. |
