On December 31, 1862 and the following day, Union forces engaged Confederate soldiers in a battle at Stone River Tennessee. First Lieutenant Frederick Phisterer was one of eight soldiers who was so conspicuous for his gallantry in this action that he was awarded the Medal of Honor. On December 31 Lieutenant Phisterer voluntarily conveyed, under a heavy fire, information to the commander of a battalion of regular troops by which the battalion was saved from capture or annihilation. |
